Le groupe Oeneo a récemment pris une participation majoritaire dans la tonnellerie Millet, située près de Saint-Emilion, dans la région de Bordeaux !
La tonnellerie Millet est reconnue pour son savoir-faire traditionnel et sa relation de proximité et de confiance avec de nombreuses propriétés viticoles, principalement sur la Rive Droite du Bordelais. Dominique Millet a poursuivi l’héritage familial en devenant maître tonnelier et a dédié sa vie à la tonnellerie. Il a servi la région de Saint Emilion depuis 1952 et son chiffre d’affaires a été d’environ 800 k€ en 2017. En grande difficulté à la suite du gel de l’année dernière, il aurait certainement disparu sans ce nouveau partenariat avec Seguin Moreau.
Avec ce partenariat, la tonnellerie Millet bénéficiera des forces de Seguin Moreau, comme son réseau commercial mondial et son savoir-faire sur les fonctions internes (logistique, qualité, finances…)
Est-ce que Millet deviendra un « petit Seguin Moreau » ? Les deux tonnelleries vont conserver leur propre identité, qui sont réellement différentes et complémentaires sur le marché de la barrique. La volonté affichée est de réaliser un partenariat « gagnant-gagnant » pour les deux parties.
Seguin Moreau est une marque très technique, fortement basée sur la R&D concernant les échanges vins/bois. Elle offre une large gamme de barriques, grands contenants, et alternatifs. Son positionnement est haut de gamme, avec une clientèle majoritairement composée de « grands crus » et « grands domaines » dans tous les vignobles mondiaux. De son côté, Millet est une petite tonnellerie. Sa gamme se compose de barriques traditionnelles, basée sur la sélection de grains, d’origines de forêt et de maturation naturelle. C’est une entreprise ancrée dans sa région, ses clients sont majoritairement en Rive Droite Bordelaise, et aux USA pour l’étranger. Dominique Millet continuera à jouer un rôle majeur dans l’activité, en tant que responsable de la fabrication. Le positionnement prix de Millet est plus bas que celui de Seguin Moreau.
Oeneo group has recently acquired a majority stake in Millet cooperage, located near Saint Emilion, in Bordeaux area !
Millet Cooperage is well known for its traditional know-how and its close relationship of trust with small and medium size wineries, mostly on the right bank of the Bordeaux vineyards. Dominique Millet followed in his father’s footsteps by becoming a master cooper and dedicating his life to the cooperage. His company has been serving Saint-Emilion clients since 1952 and recorded a turnover of around 800K€ in 2017. It unfortunately went through a rough patch when the frost affected this area and would probably have disappeared without this new partnership with Seguin Moreau.
Becoming a partner of the Seguin Moreau means that Millet cooperage will benefit from Seguin Moreau’s strengths, such as its commercial network all around the world and back office services (logistics, quality management, financial know-how, etc.).
Will Millet become a mini-Seguin Moreau? Of course not! The two French cooperages will keep their own identity, which are really different and complementary on the barrel market : this is truly a win-win partnership for both of them.
As you all know, Seguin Moreau is a very technical brand, working hard within R&D programs about oak compounds and their exchanges with wine/spirits. It offers a large range of barrels, large containers and even alternatives. It has a high-end market positioning with mostly « grand crus » style customers in every vineyard of the world.
On the opposite, Millet is a small cooperage. Its product range is composed of traditional barrels, based on oak grain selection, forests origin and natural seasoning. It is a local company, whose clients are mainly located in the Bordeaux right bank area and in the USA for its exports. Millet is a family company and Dominique will continue to play an active part in the activity, as Production Director. The price position is also lower than Seguin Moreau.
