As it is traditional, it is in July that the International Wine Challenge distributes its annual prizes. Thousands of wines from 55 countries were tested by a panel of experts – revealing revealing and sometimes unexpected results. France surpassed itself once again by being awarded 1,331 medals in total, more than any other country, including a formidable 128 Golds. Burgundy won 41 golds, but the real star of the show was Champagne with 47. In Champagne, everyone is waiting for the name of the Winemaker of the year for the sparkling wine category (remember last year, it was Christophe Rapeneau who got it). And as the 2018 results are unexpected … There is none for Champagne. It’s Cherie Spriggs for Nyetimber, who won the IWC Sparkling Winemaker Award of the Year 2018. This is the first time that a winemaker outside Champagne has won the prize. However, very nice awards were awarded to the Champenois. The Daniel Thibault Trophy for Champion Sparkling Wine 2018 went to Moët & Chandon MCIII. The judges described this champagne « as a starry wine with an intense bouquet

of nuts and brioche. This year’s 2018 Champions Champion was awarded to Piper-Heidsieck Rare 2002. The Len Evans Trophy recognizes excellence and consistency over a five-year period. This year, the worthy winner was Henriot champagne. Over the past five years, each of the Henriot Champagne wines has won a prize, with 97% of them having received a medal.
